Key Supporters of End Hunger Network to be Honored at Recipe for Hope Luncheon
Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples to Deliver Keynote Address
HOUSTON, Texas (July 25, 2007) — Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples will deliver the keynote address at End Hunger Network's upcoming Recipe for Hope Luncheon, which will honor stalwart supporters Vinson & Elkins LLP and former board chairman Bill Boyar. The event is scheduled for Oct. 18 at the Westin Oaks Hotel.
The nonprofit agency paving the way to ending hunger in Houston will recognize the Vinson & Elkins law firm with the Barbara Falik Humanitarian Award, and Boyar will receive the Mary Barden Keegen Volunteer Award. Both honorees have had years of dedicated involvement with End Hunger Network.
"Vinson & Elkins continually provides tremendous financial and volunteer support to End Hunger Network," said the organization's executive director, David Davenport. "The firm plays a vital role in many of our special events and programs, and Bert Tabor, a partner in the firm, has been on our board since our founding. End Hunger Network could not fulfill its mission without the dedicated support of local businesses like Vinson & Elkins."
Boyar became involved with the organization after joining the board in 2003 and was appointed board chair for 2005. He also served as campaign chair for End Hunger Network's recent capital campaign, which raised funds to build the Mary Barden Keegan Hunger Relief Center, End Hunger Network's new headquarters, kitchen and cold storage facility that has become a national model for food rescue and hunger relief operations. Under Boyar's leadership, End Hunger Network is near to completing Phase II of the capital campaign, which will expand the facility's disaster response capabilities.
"End Hunger Network and the thousands of Houstonians who would otherwise go hungry every day thank Bill Boyar for his tireless support," Davenport said. "He helped our founder, the late Mary Barden Keegan, turn her vision into a reality through his contributions of time and money. He is always actively involved and encourages others to get involved as well."
Former Vinson & Elkins attorneys Kris McGee and board member Sondee Hatcher are chairs for this year's Recipe for Hope Luncheon. The annual event serves as a fundraiser and provides an opportunity for End Hunger Network to thank its friends and partners for their commitment to ending hunger in the Houston area.
