What inspired you to pursue a career in law?

I went to law school because I was interested in the study of law and not particularly becoming a lawyer. Real estate development has always been an interest of mine and grew up in a household with two architects/urban planners as parents, but did not correlate that interest to a legal practice until my second year of law school. In that year I found a job as a paralegal/law clerk for a small practice that included real estate transactions and knew from there what I wanted to do with my law degree.

What practice areas do you have experience in, and what aspects of it do you find most interesting or challenging?

I had a brief (months) experience in insurance defense litigation working for a particular case involving mortgage backed securities in 2003, but doggedly sought out opportunities that would bring allow me to practice transactional real estate law and luckily found an opportunity quickly in 2004 doing just that and have not stopped since. The scope of my practice has expanded over the years to various aspects of real estate development and finance and particularly expanded the lending work in my practice in 2008, but have always worked in real estate.

Can you share a memorable experience that has shaped your career?

I worked as part of a multi-firm collaborative team on an adaptive re-use project with a large non-profit component that involved subdividing a high rise building utilizing condominium provision, various tax credit financing as well as conventional lending and land use changes. I really enjoyed the team work that was involved with various professionals in the legal, architectural, engineering, finance, and governmental spaces, learning from other professionals about their areas of expertise, and culminating in a project that still operates today to serve a valuable space to address an ongoing community need.

Tell us something people might not know about you.

I lived in Berlin between college and law school and speak conversational German fluently.

What is a favorite book, podcast, movie or restaurant you have enjoyed lately?

Recently I read and enjoyed God, Human, Animal, Machine, which deals with the intersection of technology with religious and philosophical metaphor, and also really enjoy Shankar Vedantam’s podcast Hidden Brain.
