What inspired you to pursue a career in law?
When I was an undergraduate at Texas A&M, I attended a professional careers graduate school program. I was drawn to law school because of the many opportunities and career options that law school provided. I was also particularly drawn to law because it provided an opportunity to have a great deal of autonomy and to be my own boss. I am not the lawyer that grew up dreaming of becoming a lawyer or that comes from of family of lawyers; there are no lawyers in my family.
What practice areas do you have experience in, and what aspects of it do you find most interesting or challenging?
My practice is general commercial litigation with a focus on employment-related matters. In my 25+ years I have handled all types of commercial, employment, and general civil litigation disputes. Generally speaking, the lawsuits I handle involve disputes around compliance with contractual obligations, misuse of trade secrets, violations of fiduciary duties, wrongful termination, and corporate governance. I also spend a fair bit of my time advising our business owner clients on business related decisions including compliance with the myriad of employment laws that companies must navigate. There are many interesting and challenging aspects of my practice, but one of the most interesting is working through a complex set of facts with a client, identifying their goals, and developing the plan to accomplish that goal.
Can you share a memorable experience that has shaped your career?
Anytime you receive the personal note from a client expressing their thanks for the hard work, commitment, and results means a lot. This is why I continue to do this. Many experiences have shaped my career. I have had the privilege of representing several clients for 10, 15, 20 years. It is incredibly rewarding and satisfying to watch those clients grow and to know I have been a part of their success. I have also had the opportunity to represent individuals and companies in “bet-the-company” litigation. Three of these matters I think about often. In each, it truly was the opposing side’s stated goal to ruin my client. In each, we prevailed. Two went to trial and one settled.
Tell us something people might not know about you.
If I were not a lawyer, I would spend a lot more time standing on the front of a skiff stalking fish with my fly rods.
What is a favorite book, podcast, movie or restaurant you have enjoyed lately?
I love any restaurant that makes a good martini. I am currently listening to The Rosary in a Years. I don’t really watch movies.
