HBJ: Houston law firm to move into new Upper Kirby development

A Houston-based law firm will expand into one of Upper Kirby’s newest office developments, and it’s making an operational change that could resonate with clients counting their pennies more closely.

BoyarMiller, a business and litigation law firm, will move from its current digs on San Felipe Street in River Oaks to One Grove Street, an office building in the future mixed-use development Kirby Grove. BoyarMiller Chairman Chris Hanslik said that the firm is on “the front end” of designing legal space that’s centered around single-space offices, instead of the large, lavish offices historically associated with top execs at large firms and companies. The firm signed San Fransisco-based Gensler as the architect.

“What you don’t want to have is a client come to your space and feel like their fees are going to an extravagance in the firm’s office,” Hanslik said.

BoyarMiller will move into the Midway Cos. development in January. The firm’s headcount stands at 26 attorneys, but BoyarMiller isn’t planning a hiring spree once it moves into its 24,500-square-foot space. Instead, it’s aiming for “steady, smart” growth and plans on using the new office space in part to recruit clients and legal talent, Hanslik said.

“Obviously, anytime when you have something new to sell, there’s something to talk about with prospective clients and prospective employees or talent that will give you a jumping-off point,” Hanslik said. “In terms of our firm, that’s something deeper and will help (us sell) our strategy for becoming more and more successful in Houston.”
