“I’ve always said that growth and profit are not strategies, but if you build the right business model on a solid foundation of core principles, responsible growth and making money result. I guess we have been a grand experiment to determine whether a law firm built on culture first could succeed. We started our journey well before it was fashionable to post words about mission and values on a website. For us, our unique culture is who we are and is very alive and real. I guess you could say it has worked just fine.”
– Bill Boyar, Founding Shareholder, Business Group
Excellent leadership can be distinguished by one’s impact, influence and inspiration. There’s no doubt that Bill Boyar has imparted all of those attributes as co-founder of BoyarMiller and through his relentless community service.
“While I love what I do here at the firm, for the past almost 20 years I have been involved in guiding local nonprofits on their strategies for growth and success,” said Bill. “It’s rewarding to be a part of driving positive change and making a difference in people’s lives.”
For three academic years Bill has been serving as Chairman of the Executive Board of KIPP Houston Public Schools, the organization’s largest region educating 15,000 students in 28 schools in grades pre-K3 through 12. KIPP serves low-income communities helping students get to and through college.
“While only 10 percent of public school students from low-income communities in Harris County graduate from college, nearly 50 percent of KIPP students graduate from college,” said Bill. “We’re helping break a cycle of education failure and lack of opportunity to escape poverty.”
Bill is now part of the leadership team working to bring KIPP’s four Texas regions together to form a single district that will initially consist of 50 schools and serve 25,000 students. “With larger scale and standardization we can produce better academic results across the state and serve more kids faster,” said Bill.
Other organizations in which Bill has had an impact include SEARCH Homeless Services, where he was on the Board of Directors for 10 years serving as chair for five years. He also served in leadership positions of the Houston Food Bank and End Hunger Network and was instrumental in the merger of the organizations in 2008.
For his “mental health” and enjoyment, Bill and his family are avid golfers. He plays competitively and maintains a low single-digit handicap. Married 36 years, he and Pam have two adult sons, Justin and Sam, who have successful careers in real estate and the oil and gas business.
Recognized within BoyarMiller as the father of the firm’s culture, Bill, along with Gary Miller, founded the firm in 1990 on a clear mission and principles that comprise its core values.
“I’ve always said that growth and profit are not strategies, but if you build the right business model on a solid foundation of core principles, responsible growth and making money result.” said Bill. “I guess we have been a grand experiment to determine whether a law firm built on culture first could succeed. We started our journey well before it was fashionable to post words about mission and values on a website. For us, our unique culture is who we are and is very alive and real. I guess you could say it has worked just fine.”
Optimistic about 2018, Bill believes the firm is well positioned with plenty of talent to help clients address their challenges and achieve their objectives for success.
“We are a young firm and sharply focused,” said Bill. “Along with our culture, that provides the strength we need to be good partners with our clients.”
