Bill Boyar Winner of Center for Houston’s Future IMPACT Award
Initiatives Focused on Ending Hunger and Homelessness
HOUSTON, Texas (October 9, 2012) —
“We have confidence in Houston’s Future.”
That comment, spoken by national Atlantic correspondent and keynote speaker James Fallows summed up the optimistic mood of the 350 guests at the Center for Houston’s Future (CHF) 2012 IMPACT Gala, hosted by the Center for Houston’s Future on October 4th. Reinforcing that sentiment was the announcement of the inaugural 2012 IMPACT Award winner, Bill Boyar, presented to honor transformative community leadership. Chaired by chairs Alex and Astley Blair, the IMPACT Gala also featured CHF Leadership Forum Alum, and Rice University Representative, Y. Ping Sun, who interviewed Fallows. James Calaway, Chairman of the CHF board, flew back from Argentina to present the IMPACT Award.
“The Center for Houston’s Future has a very important role in identifying leaders of all ages, helping them understand and confront the critical issues that face our region, and then engaging them to do good work,” said IMPACT Award winner Boyar. “I deeply appreciate what this award acknowledges – the teamwork and great partnerships that must occur to improve the quality of life for people in our community.”
The three IMPACT Award finalists, Boyar, Sylvia Mayer and Ruthanne Mefford, were nominated and voted on by the CHF’s Business Leadership Forum Alumni – making the award particularly meaningful to the group of proven, seasoned leaders from throughout the region who attended the gala.
While all three were honored for their unparalleled community work in the Houston region, Boyar took home the prestigious award. Boyar, founder and former Chairman at BoyarMiller, has spent the better part of the past 15 years committed to improving educational opportunities and quality of life for the citizens of the Houston Region. He is a board member of KIPP-Houston Public Schools and former chairman and current board member of SEARCH Homeless Services where he greatly expanded the effectiveness and stability of that organization. Boyar served as Chairman of the End Hunger Network and spearheaded the capital campaign to build their food distribution center as well as the merger with the Houston Food Bank which consolidated local efforts to address hunger in Houston.
The IMPACT Gala is an annual event for CHF, designed to honor of-the moment leadership by the CHF Leadership Forum Alumni, and provide meaningful dialogue about the future of the Houston region as seen through the lens national and global leaders.
Center for Houston’s Future, The Region’s Think Tank, is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization that works to solve our region’s toughest problems by providing meaningful research, defining innovative strategies, and engaging diverse leaders.
