Recently we hosted our annual Forum event where we brought together industry thought leaders to discuss sectors crucial to our city. The topic this year delved into: What Keeps Houston’s Economy Moving.

Providing insightful commentary were speakers Brad Freels, Chairman and CEO, Midway; Jessica Seff, Vice President, M&A, Statesman Corporate Finance; and Charlie Jenkins, CEO, Port Houston.  They discussed how growth, hiring, the economy, and investment are influencing Houston’s business environment. Some key takeaways included:

• Rather than pursuing new ground-up real estate development in an uncertain environment, strategic investors are focusing on adaptive reuse and mixed-use conversions that transform underutilized assets into vibrant urban destinations.
• In corporate finance and M&A, transaction timelines have extended significantly. This is partially due to material pricing volatility driven by tariff uncertainty causing deals to stall as parties struggle to model future margins and working capital needs with confidence.
• Regarding the port and trade, Port Houston is sharply contrasted to the caution pervading the commercial real estate and M&A sectors, with exceptional growth driven by strategic investments and Houston’s commanding position in global trade.
